Automated Support for Order Picking and Processing Returns

W e propose to develop a wireless PDA based application to automate the picking and packing of an order from a warehouse. As orders come into an organization they are collected and given to employees at the warehouse to pick and pack. We propose the use of a combination of wireless and RFID technologies to automate this picking process. Our wireless application will run on a PDA and will take a set of orders, and gather the list of items in each order. As the employee responsible for picking and packing walks or drives around the warehouse, the application will detect the RFIDs of the various items in the warehouse, and direct the person to the appropriate shelves to pick the appropriate quantity of each item, based on the orders currently on hand.  We believe such an application will be very useful for large warehouses. Advantages of using this application are:

1.Orders can be processed as they come in dynamically.
2. No prior planning is required to gather all orders. The application will develop an optimal pickingstrategy.
3. The application can automatically detect when all items for an order have been picked and automatically update the inventory.
4.The same application can also be used to process returns to the warehouse to the appropriate shelves.
5.It will increase the efficiency of the picking and packing process by reducing the time spent.
6 .will eliminate the need for searching for items and planning an appropriate route through the warehouse.
